Overview
Pilgrimage destination Maria Luggau (1179 m)
Maria Luggau is the much frequented religious centre of the valley and is a pilgrimage destination well known far beyond Carinthia’s borders. As much and as far away known this secluded and wild-romantic piece of mountain nature is now, as unknown and nameless it was before it became a pilgrimage destination in the 16th century.
A visit to the mills is especially recommended: the 5 old watermills are still in operation. Farm tools are displayed in the Mill Museum and the spinning room as well as the waterworks are also worth a visit. A film is screened at the "Bauernkino – Farmers‘ Cinema" during the guided tour (every Friday at 10 am). The tour finishes with the historic village (paintings and building culture), the basilica (the only one in Carinthia), the cloister and the farm shop where 60 farmers offer their products.
