Cross-country skiing fun without borders
Cross-country skiing fun on over 60km!
This cross-country ski trail leads along the border between Carinthia and East Tyrol and is one of the most beautiful and diverse cross-country ski trails in the Southern Alps.
The trail connects the villages Kartitsch, Obertilliach and Untertilliach with the Carinthian villages of Maria Luggau and St. Lorenzen in the Lesachtal Valley. The perfectly groomed cross-country ski trail leads mainly along the River Gail through the valley bottom and includes only a few passages of intermediate difficulty. Due to its location in a height of 1200 to 1500 metres, this trail is also one of Carinthia’s and Tyrol’s most snow-reliable cross-country ski trail. Some of its sections can also be covered by artificial snow and the trail is open from mid-November onwards.
Brief route description
Starting in the west (Hollbruck), the border trail slightly ascends through Kartitsch to the Kartitsch Saddle. Here is also the trail’s highest point (1.526 m) and its most romantic part. Slightly descending, across open meadows and through snow-covered forests, past the Schöntal Valley and the Leitnertal Valley to Obertilliach (Cross-Country Ski & Biathlon Centre) and continuing with a slight descent across open meadows and then into the narrowing valley to Untertilliach or across the state border towards Maria Luggau or St. Lorenzen in Carinthia. The individual sections of this cross-country ski trail have several return possibilities, thus duration and length can be chosen according to the capability of the individual cross-country skier.
Many circular routes with various features can also be found in the surroundings of the Biathlon Centre Obertilliach. You can also get a first insight into the world of biathlon here.
Cross-country skiing tickets are available from the Tourist Information Lesachtal as well as the Spar Supermarket Prünster in Maria Luggau!
